Make WFH Work For Your Employees

Virtual Desktop Services powered by Nutanix Frame

The future of work has changed.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has transformed business operations rapidly. Many organizations mandated work from home for their employees, but few were prepared for such a massive change.

The ability for employees to remotely access key systems and applications anytime, from any device, without compromising security or performance became a strategic IT initiative almost overnight. Having the right mix of technology and expertise can help you increase efficiency, stay secure and ensure productivity as we adjust to this new way of working.

How do I securely and efficiently enable my remote workforce?

Global stay-at-home orders have dramatically increased demand for new tools and digital strategies to support a largely remote workforce. Employees must have secure access to enterprise applications and systems, often from unmanaged personal devices.

To counteract supply chain shortages of laptops and other devices, many companies implemented or expanded their bring-your-own-device (BYOD) programs to help enable work from home employees. While BYOD has many benefits including enhanced productivity, reduced corporate equipment costs, and improved employee satisfaction, it creates additional challenges around securing critical data and systems.

Strong security has always been important for end-user computing, but in our new WFH normal—it’s become critical. Employees can be more inclined to take risks and ignore security best practices in exchange for a perceived increase in productivity when working remotely, making them easy targets.

The rapid shift away from traditional workspaces strained IT teams and created new vulnerabilities that organizations are still working to address

As organizations extend beyond the traditional confines of “the office,” IT teams have had to enable policies like BYOD and deploy new technologies like virtual desktops or collaboration tools.

IT leaders are faced with two interesting challenges with this directive – first, teams must quickly learn and deploy these new tools for the workforce, and second, existing processes and day-to-day activities must also pivot to support these programs.

New is necessary but new doesn’t always mean an easier way of doing something. For many organizations, the shift to virtual desktops is beneficial, but comes with uncertainty and learning that must occur. The unfamiliarity and lack of experience with these new tools and capabilities creates questions and legitimate concerns for IT organizations:

  • Are virtual desktops secure?
  • Will I have latency or performance issues?
  • What are persistent and non-persistent desktops?
  • Can this approach scale as we add users?
  • Is it one more thing to manage?

This idea of “one more thing” is a critical one as IT teams are realizing that some of the day-to-day activities that were already challenging in pre-pandemic times are even more so, now. While the new tools and technologies are key to enabling remote workers, managing devices, keeping those devices and data secure, updating systems on decentralized or dispersed systems, all are exponentially more difficult.

VDI Brings Big Benefits to Remote Workers and Customers

WFH is here to stay, IT operating models have permanently shifted, and roadmaps for digital transformation have accelerated

We’ve been existing in the pandemic world for nearly nine months and most organizations have moved away from reactionary changes to more sustainable strategic pivots. In a recent Gartner survey1, upwards of 80% of organizations plan to allow their employees to work remotely post-pandemic, and by 2023 fewer than one-third of digital workers will select the corporate office as their preferred place to work. As a result, IT teams will be required to adapt and manage an “anywhere, anytime” style of work.

IT operating models have permanently shifted. According to KPMG2, “With every change you make to navigate through COVID-19, you will impact your IT operating model across multiple dimensions: service delivery model, people, process, technology, performance insights and data, and governance.”

A key pain point identified by KPMG is that an organization would be ‘lacking the right mix of talent and skill sets to adjust to new ways of working.”

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) enhances security, reduces reliance on supply chain, and enhances employee productivity

Managing internal devices is a crucial, yet time-consuming, function for IT teams. When internal resources are stretched thin due to any of a variety of causes or key skill sets are missing from the team, the entire organization’s productivity can suffer. And, depending upon the organization, innovation, revenue, and strategic initiatives can be impacted as well.

Cloud desktop technologies have matured greatly over the past several years and are an ideal solution as organizations must support remote workers and their need to securely access enterprise applications from multiple devices and locations. Yet, the technology can be complex to manage and implement internally.

A virtual desktop solution can be deployed on-premises or hosted in the cloud. Many organizations are moving to a cloud-based solution and choose to leverage a managed services provider’s (MSP) expertise in both cloud and virtual desktop technologies.

A MSP not only will help organizations that are struggling to design and deploy virtual desktops, they may also handle configuration, monitoring, and ongoing administration and support for your managed dedicated desktop as a service solution.

Additionally, a virtual desktop solution is critical for security in that it eliminates the need to store critical data on endpoint devices such as laptops that are easily lost, stolen, or compromised. Instead, users access data from a centralized, enterprise-class datacenter where it is professionally managed, monitored, and backed up.
